A genus of lichens in which pseudopodetia are formed; the pseudopodetia are solid and may bear scale-like, finger-like, or coralloid outgrowths (phyllocladia). Apothecia are borne at the tips or on the sides of the pseudopodetia. Spores are multiseptate (see septum) or muriform. Species are found on acidic substrates, either on rocks or on the ground, chiefly in cool, humid regions or in mountainous areas of warmer regions.
