(b Chichester, 1909; d Oxted, 1988). Eng. organist and choral conductor. On teaching staff RAM. Org., St Bartholomew the Great, Smithfield, 1949–61. Founder and cond., London Bach Soc. from 1946. Prof., RAM, from 1945 and taught at Goldsmiths' Coll., Univ. of London, 1948–76. Famous for perfs. of Bach's St Matthew Passion in Ger. with forces near to Leipzig orig. Wrote Bach's Passions (London, 1979). OBE 1985.
