A group of countries, mainly in the Commonwealth, which linked their currencies to sterling and held their foreign exchange reserves in London. This group was very important in the inter-war years and immediate post-war period, but declined in importance in the 1950s, mainly because of the UK's decreasing share in world trade and finance.
