Quick Reference

A member of the Merchant Taylors’ Company after his ten-year apprenticeship ended, Stent ran a shop near Newgate selling engravings printed from his own rolling presses, specializing in affordable, original, and utilitarian pieces. A prolific acquirer of plates, Stent built on the more than 700 he bought with a bequest from his father, John, amassing a collection of 1,750 pieces, eight times the size of any previous collection.
