(1880–1967) Sir Frank Stenton is best remembered as the author of a classic work, Anglo-Saxon England (1943, 3rd edn, 1971). He was the leading Anglo-Saxon scholar of his day. Stenton was Professor of Modern History in the University of Reading, where he had started his career as research fellow in Local History (1908–12). See also place-names.
