Quick Reference

(1799–1856), born Berwick-upon-Tweed, England, was an author and editor who produced the first issue of the South Australian Gazette and Colonial Register (see Register), published in England in 1836. He then went with the first colonists to SA to continue the Gazette, which had fallen foul of the government and which became the South Australian Register by the time he withdrew from the journal in 1842. In 1845 he founded another South Australian Gazette and Colonial Register; from 1847 until it ceased publication in 1852 it was titled the South Australian Gazette and Mining Register.
