John Alexander Stewart was born in Moffat, Dumfriesshire on 19 October 1846, the son of a minister, and died in Oxford on 27 December 1933. He was educated at the universities of Edinburgh and Oxford (Lincoln College), and became a Student (i.e. Fellow) of Christ Church in 1870. He was White's Professor of Moral Philosophy between 1897 and 1927.
