US astronaut. During the Challenger space shuttle mission in February 1984, he and Bruce McCandless conducted the first untethered extravehicular activity. He also flew on the first mission of Atlantis, in October 1985. Stewart was selected as an astronaut in 1979 and left NASA in 1986.
