sthalapurāṇa

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

A text, or a section of a text, which provides a foundation myth for a local temple or tīrtha, and details the merit (puṇya) to be gained by visiting that particular site. In style, sthalapurāṇas often model themselves on the classical Purāṇas, although they employ the local language, rather than Sanskrit. One of their purposes may be to connect the temple god or goddess with a great, pan-Indian deity. Māhātmyas sometimes perform much the same function.

Subjects: Hinduism.
