Amer. soprano. While at Columbia Univ. created Henrietta M in Amer. premières of Thomson's The Mother of us all and sang in Bloch's Macbeth. In 1949 chosen by Toscanini to sing in NBC perfs. of Aida (Priestess) and Falstaff (Nannetta). Won Lausanne int. competition for opera singers. Débuts: Eur. (Florence) 1951; Salzburg Fest. 1952; Vienna Opera 1952; Aix Fest. 1955 (and until 1971); Chicago Opera 1955; NY Met 1961. First American to be made an Austrian Kammersängerin, 1962.
