Quick Reference

A zone of exceptionally strong, surface winds found in systems undergoing extreme cyclogenesis (see bomb). The high winds originate in the cloud head of the depression and descend towards the surface behind the depression centre in the general region of the dry intrusion. In satellite images, the cloud head has a characteristic hooked shape (resembling a scorpion's tail and sting), and the sting jet descends where evaporation is occurring at its very tip, giving rise to the highest (potentially extremely destructive) winds in the system.
