American painter and installation artist, born in Seattle. She studied painting at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, and at Yale University. She is known for colourful constructions on an environmental scale, incorporating plastics and found objects including carpets and furniture, which break the boundaries between painting and sculpture. Adrian Searle has described her work as ‘not painting’ but ‘something like the memory of a painting’ (South Bank Centre, Unbound, 1994). The artist has commented that ‘My work has grown from an attempt to gain a sense of control of, or at least comfort with, the material world’.
