A law describing the rate at which suspended particles settle, formulated in 1845 by the physicist Sir George Gabriel Stokes (1819–1903). The settling velocity (V) in cm/s is calculated by V = CD2, where C is a constant related to the density and viscosity of the fluid and the density of the suspension and D is the diameter of the particles (assumed to be spheres) in cm.
