A small family of deep-sea fish that have long, tapering bodies covered with loosely attached scales and a very large mouth with fang-like teeth suggestive of voraciously predatory behaviour. The dorsal and anal fins are set close to the small tail fin. Usually dark in colour, Stomias boa (scaly dragonfish), 40 cm, is thought to live at depths of more than 1000 m. There are about nine species, distributed world-wide.
