The name given to a short length of rope. While secured at one end it is used to hold temporarily, with a stopper hitch, parts of the running rigging of sailing ships while the fall is being belayed. A stopper hitch is a rolling hitch in which the second turn rides over the first. A chain stopper is a metal grab designed to hold a ship's anchor cable.
