Quick Reference

Signals where black canvas cones were hoisted at coastguard stations and other prominent places along the coast when a gale was forecast. The number of cones, and the way they were hoisted, indicated from which direction the gale was expected. Storm cones were introduced in 1861 by Robert Fitzroy, and until recently were still used in some countries.
