French still-life painter, active in Paris, where he lived 1621–40 (in this period he also made a visit to Venice, in 1629), and thereafter in his native Strasbourg. He painted in a spare, stiff, almost archaic style that has appealed greatly to modern taste—most of his paintings have come to light since the 1930s. The best collection is in the Musée de l'Œuvre de Notre-Dame, Strasbourg.
