(SHA) a statutory organization in England responsible for strategic leadership, building capacity, organizational development, and performance management in the local National Health Service. SHAs (28 of them) were established in 2002 by merging the existing health authorities, and each SHA area contains various NHS trusts. In July 2006 the number of SHAs was reduced to 10.
