Ger. horn‐player and composer. Prin. hn., Munich Court opera orch. 1847–89. Taught at Munich Acad. until 1896. Cond. semi‐professional orch. (Wilde Gungl) 1875–96. Although he disliked Wagner's mus., played in several Wagner premières and was consulted by composer on Siegfried's hn.‐call. Wrote hn. conc., works for hn. and pf., etc. The composer Richard Strauss was his son by his 2nd wife.
