A form of cognitive stress management that athletes use to overcome competitive stress. The athlete produces a hierarchy of stressors and identifies the type of negative thoughts associated with each stressor. The athlete then develops positive self-statements as substitutes for the negative thoughts. Finally, the athlete imagines each stressor, stating with the least stressful, and attempts to feel the stress while practising physical relaxation techniques, as well as replacing the negative thoughts with positive ones.
