A feeling experienced when the muscles and connective tissue of a joint are stretched to a point at which some resistance or slight stress is felt but there is no pain. The stretch stress is used to obtain the stretch position when doing flexibility exercises. To gain maximum benefit, this end position is usually held (with no bouncing movements) for 10 or more seconds before the body is returned slowly to its original position. Quick movements are avoided throughout the stretch to minimize the risk of damage.
