Any voluntary muscle, capable of fast contraction, composed of long myofibrils that have many nuclei and are transversely striped by alternating bands of myosin and actin, including all skeletal muscles. Also cardiac muscle, which is striped but is exceptional in being involuntary. Also called striated muscle or voluntary muscle (excluding cardiac muscle). Compare smooth muscle.
