A common sea urchin used in studies of molecular developmental genetics. During oogenesis and egg maturation, large reservoirs of histone mRNAs are produced by females. Histone genes (q.v.) were first isolated from this species. Its estimated genome size is 845,000 kilobases. See echinoderm.
