A miscellaneous group of disorders with onset and recrudescence frequently associated with emotional or work-related stress. These conditions include hypertension, peptic ulcer, atopic dermatitis, migraine headaches, menstrual irregularities, and others. In almost all such conditions, other etiological factors can be identified; e.g., peptic ulcer is associated with Helicobacter pylori infection. Stress per se is not a sufficient cause of these conditions.
