An area of loose connective tissue limited above by the mucous membrane and the tongue and below by the superficial layer of the cervical fascia as it extends from the hyoid bone to the mandible. It is divided into the sublingual and submaxillary spaces by the mylohyoid muscle. Inflammation and cellulitis of this area is described as Ludwig's angina and infections of the second and third mandibular molars may perforate the mandible and spread into the submandibular or submental spaces.
