A form of display (1) in which an animal that loses a fight, whether an escalated fight or a conventional fight, adopts a submissive posture to acknowledge defeat and to deter further attack. Human equivalents include gestures (1) of non-verbal communication such as holding up one's empty palms to communicate ‘I give up’. US submissive behavior. See also emblem.
