The flight or path of a rocket or spacecraft that does not follow Earth orbit. The first US astronaut travelled on a sub-orbital flight: Alan Shepard was launched in May 1961 to an altitude of more than 161 km, and after a 15-minute flight landed 483 km from Cape Canaveral, Florida.
