Refers to those Muslims of the second generation who came after the generation of personal Companions of the Prophet Muhammad. People designated as successors (tabiun) personally knew at least one of the Companions. The next generation of Muslims who knew at least one of the first successors is known as the “successors of the successors.” The successors played an important role in hadith transmission. Among the best-known successors is the pious traditionist Hasan al-Basri (d. 728).
