Quick Reference

An intermediate compound in the conversion of alpha-ketoglutaric acid to succinic acid during the citric-acid cycle, a process linked to the formation of the energy-rich guanosine triphosphate (GTP, see guanosine phosphate). Succinate is not always the final product as the succinyl coenzyme A may be employed for acylation reactions or to initiate porphyrin synthesis.
