In the UK, a label used on foods that do not contain table sugar (sucrose). However, they may contain other sugars such as glucose, fructose, or sugar alcohols (e.g. xylitol, used in ‘tooth-friendly’ sweets because it deters the growth of bacteria that cause dental caries). Foods containing xylitol are unsuitable for diabetics.
