Overview

suicide prevention

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

Suicide is frequent enough in some populations, for example marginalized young people in indigenous communities in affluent nations, that programs aimed at preventing it have high priority. Methods and procedures such as psychotherapy, provision of emotional and social support, use of mood-modifying drugs to relieve severe depression, and miscellaneous other measures, e.g., awareness-raising educational programs, can be deployed. Probably the most effective strategy is to identify and intervene with high-risk groups and provide improved training and career opportunities to motivate school children and youth in high-risk populations, such as young people in indigenous communities.
