## Quick Reference

In statistics, a shortened expression for the sum of the squared deviations of a set of scores from their arithmetic mean, to be distinguished from the sum of the squared scores, the meaning usually being clear from the context. The mean of the sum of the squared deviations, called the *mean square*, is used as an estimate of variance.
