A nucleus that has an ellipsoidal shape, with the long axis about twice the size of the short axis. Such nuclei can be formed by fusing high-energy heavy ions with other nuclei. They lose energy by emitting a characteristic pattern of gamma rays as they revert to a more normal shape.
