Quick Reference

Either of two collections of neuron cell bodies that are situated just above the inferior olivary nuclei in the pons and that receive signals from the trapezoid bodies and project to the inferior colliculi. They contain binaural neurons responding to inputs from both ears, the inputs reaching the superior olivary nuclei after the trapezoid bodies have amplified the left-right differences, and they are implicated in sound localization based on binaural differences in both timing and sound intensity. Also called the superior olivary complex or the superior olive. Compare inferior olivary nucleus. SON abbrev. [So called because it is olive-shaped and above the inferior olivary nuclei]
