Quick Reference

Exercise that requires energy production exceeding that which can be sustained by purely oxidative metabolism, that is, it requires an oxygen consumption greater than the maximal aerobic capacity. Sprinting is a supramaximal exercise. A 100-m sprint run at 36 km h−1 would require an oxygen consumption of approximately 140 ml kg−1 mm−1, far greater than the highest recorded VO2max. Supramaximal exercise requires energy from anaerobic metabolism.
