Amer. pianist and composer of Slovak parentage. Studied at Carnegie Inst. of Technology and at Juilliard School with William Bergsma and Vincent Persichetti. Was pianist for Pittsburgh SO. Teacher in comp. dept. of San Francisco Cons. from 1988 (chairman from 2000). Comp.‐in‐res. Old Globe Th., San Diego, 1959–94; mus. dir. APA‐Phoenix Repertory Company, NY, 1961–8, Amer. Shakespeare Fest., Stratford, Conn., 1969–71. His main interest has always been in dramatic works. Has written several operas, incl. Transformations (1973), The Love of Don Perlimplin (1984), and The Dangerous Liaisons (1994, rev. 1996–7); the choral work Dirge from Cymbeline for male ch. and off‐stage tpt. (1991); many scores for documentary films and tv prods.; instrumental works and songs.
