Substances smaller than about 20 microns that remain in the atmosphere for extended periods because their small mass is not immediately influenced by the force of gravity. Particulate matter smaller than 10 microns can be inhaled, and particles smaller than 2.5 microns can be inhaled and penetrate to the alveoli.
