Can be used by managers as part of the discipline procedure and involves temporarily relieving an employee of his or her duties and requiring him or her to leave the premises. The employee is normally suspended with pay where there has been a dispute that needs a full investigation of the circumstances. In some instances, the employee can be suspended without pay, providing the contract of employment specifies the conditions under which this applies. If investigation reveals the employee is in breach of contract, further action is taken, such as a written warning or even dismissal. If the investigation shows the employee is not in the wrong, he or she returns to work as normal, although possibly feeling he or she has been stigmatized by the suspension.
