Prolific Egyptian scholar of virtually all disciplines—Quran commentary, jurisprudence, hadith, belles-lettres, biography, philology, Sufism, history, theology, and geography. Held teaching and legal positions within the Shafii school of law. Member of the Shadhili Sufi order, for which he wrote an apology offering praise of Sufi techniques, such as dhikr. Completed al-Mahalli Jalal al-Din's Quran commentary, which has come to be known as Tafsir al-Jalalayn (The commentary of the two Jalals) and is still widely in use for its conciseness and practicality.
