The name of art schools founded in several Russian cities, including Moscow and Petrograd (St Petersburg), after the 1917 Revolution. Their very liberal regimes soon resulted in chaos. The Moscow Svomas was founded in 1918 from an amalgamation of the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture with the Stroganov Art School. In 1920 it was renamed Vkhutemas. The Petrograd Svomas was created in 1919 from the Petrograd Free Art Educational Studios (Pegoskhuma), which had been formed a year earlier when the St Petersburg Academy was abolished. In 1921 the name reverted to Academy.
