A town (modern Askar) mentioned in John 4: 5 as being in Samaria, but otherwise little known. It was a central settlement for Samaritan inhabitants between the destruction of Shechem (c.107 bce) and the foundation of Neapolis by the Romans in 70 ce. The city welcomed Jesus and gave him hospitality for two days (John 4: 40). Possibly there were Christians there at the time of the composition of John's Gospel.
