He was educated at Westminster School and Brasenose College, Oxford, and collected mainly incunabula and Elizabethan literature. His library, including his prized copy of the Sweynheym and Pannartz Livy (1469) on vellum, was sold at auction by R. H. Evans in 1824 for nearly £18,000.
