A major presynaptic protein, a polyphosphoinositide phosphatase, concentrated together with endophilin at clathrin-coated endocytic pits in nerve terminals. Synaptojanin-1 (1575 aa and 1311 aa) interacts with dynamin and amphiphysin in the process of vesicle recycling. Synaptojanin-2 (1496 aa) has a much wider tissue distribution.
