In the Byzantine Church, an ecclesiastic who lived continually with a bishop, especially in the capacity of a domestic chaplain and in order to bear witness to the purity of the bishop's moral life. Later the word was used of a dignitary associated as counsellor with a prelate who subsequently succeeded to his office.
