Quick Reference

Membrane proteins (both 538 aa) encoded by envelope genes from the human endogenous retroviruses (HERV-W in the case of syncytin-1, HERV-FRD for syncytin-2) that are specifically expressed in the placenta where they are involved in the formation of the syncytiotrophoblast. The syncytin 2 receptor is the major facilitator superfamily domain-containing 2 (MFSD2), a presumptive carbohydrate transporter with ten to twelve membrane-spanning domains.
