An assembly of the clergy of a particular Church, nation, province, or diocese, sometimes with representatives of the laity, duly convened for discussing and deciding ecclesiastical affairs. The term is recorded from late Middle English, and comes via late Latin from Greek sunodos ‘meeting’.
