syntagmatic axis

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

(structuralist semiotics) An analytical dimension spatialized as a horizontal plane representing a combination of related signifiers within a text. This is typically thought of as a sequence (in a menu, the syntagmatic axis might be starter–main course–dessert), but it can also refer to co-present signifiers (such as ‘meat and two veg’). See also syntagm; compare paradigmatic axis.
