Term used by various composers in different ways. Schumann called his 1837 set of pf. variations Études symphoniques; Elgar applied the term to his sym.‐poem Falstaff, presumably to show that it was an ‘in depth’ character‐study; Rawsthorne described an orch. set of variations as Symphonic Studies.
