Large-scale, portable pictures of secular subject-matter painted specifically for elaborately designed spaces in an interior scheme of decoration. The term is mainly applied to 18th-century paintings by artists such as François Boucher, Hubert Robert, and Claude-Joseph Vernet; a fine example is the series of four paintings The Progress of Love (Frick Collection, New York) painted by Fragonard for Madame du Barry.
