Iranian photographer and film-maker, born in Tehran. In 1977 she moved to London, where she has worked ever since, although she has said that she has never felt part of the British art scene, as there is more interest in her work elsewhere. Her Border series of photographs deals specifically with Iranian exiles in London. Although they have a documentary element and are accompanied by the stories of the individuals involved, the style of the photographs is highly formalized. Other photographs have been inspired by the French philosopher Jean Baudrillard's vision of a society of simulation in which nothing is real any longer, although, unlike those artists and theorists of the 1980s who embraced these ideas with enthusiasm, she is concerned with the human cost of the situation. One photograph from the series Beyond the Limits (2000–01) shows recognizable art world figures furiously networking at an opening without noticing the complete disappearance of the art from the walls.
